Nydia track
Finally made it!
It has taken us almost 20 years but we finally walked the Nydia track.
We walked from Duncan Bay (which is a stunning bay) to Nydia Bay and back. The sign read that the track is moderate, you need good shoes and can be slippery. As it had rained for days earlier in the week we prepared for wet feet. We were not disappointed, only a few metres in, we could see Liam still taking off with the boat, Brian and I already had to hop over the mud pools and our shoes had the first mud dives. They were certainly not going to be the last ones.
The tramp takes about 5 hours to the lodge we were staying and is gently rising over the saddle. The bush is outstanding, mainly Beech and lots of Rimu and other giants. Some creeks you have to jump over and some fallen trees you have to negotiate but oh was it worth it. Particularly at the top where Middle Earth meets the most amazing backdrops of Duncan and Nydia Bay.
It was truly amazing and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. You can combine this amazing track with a boat trip and overnight tour at Tui Nature Reserve.
In Nydia Bay we stayed at 'On the track lodge'. This accommodation is a perfect end of the day, super friendly hosts, absolute character accommodation, we even stayed in a fully restored vintage train wagon!
