The latest at Tui Nature Reserve ...

This year at Tui we've been busy planning and building new projects to enhance the environment of the park.
Life is buzzing in the reserve, the numbers of visitors have almost doubled since last year, a welcome boost to keep the project going. Also more interest in our eco-boat tours but this still needs more promotion. Many young birds were noticed and the trees are full of seeds. A visit from the biodiversity manager (Department of Conservation) was very positive! His remark, that our project was well on the way is a big push for our spirits. Also his advice on several subjects was very useful. Set back was our waspcontrol, again, the wasp bait was unavailable this year which is disappointing after the very positive results two years ago.
We saw many visitors this season, a welcome boost to our project. We noticed a keen interest in our conservation project and we provided many eco-tours. Hopefully this will be a growing trend in the future.
Some updates from Tui Nature Reserve,
What happened since June? Lots! First our biggest surprise, little Esmae, who was born in September (Havelock). A welcome new healthy baby girl for the Tui team!
On the 15th of February 2009 we received three new Kakariki birds for in the enclosures.
More solar power modules are added to our alternative power system. Depending on the weather and the total power consumption , the generator is only used as a back-up with savings between 50 to 80% of the fuel cost.

If this weekend didn’t give us enough excitement we have just received more good news. The biodiverisity funding we applied for is granted! This funding is for two years and part of this will also be a grant from the Marlborough District Council.

We are thrilled that we are the winners of not only the Habitat Enhancement but also the overall Supreme Award at the Marlborough Environment Award!
This is a real boost for our project. The prize money will be used for the improvement of the Little Blue Penguin habitat.
On the 30th of May 2009 there will be an Open Day on Tui, organized by the Council.
